Greek Style Fisherman Soup

We used to make this type of soup in the summers in Greece growing up. It is a poor soup nothing fancy but very flavorful and healthy. It features all ingredients and their pure taste as they are not covered by intense spices or sauces.

Ingredients Fish Soup

  • 800g – 1kg of Fresh whole fish (red cabezon fish, rock fish or other “red fish”)
  • 3 Potatoes (whole or cut in half depending on size)
  • 4 Zucchinis (whole)
  • 3-4 Cloves of garlic (whole)
  • 6-7 Small Onions (whole)
  • Celery leaves
  • 2 Carrots (cut in half)
  • Sliced or whole tomatoes (optional)
  • Salt & Pepper to taste
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Juice of 1 to 2 fresh lemon (depending on taste)


  • Place Potatoes, onions, garlic cloves  & carrots in cold water (to cover them) and bring to a boil for ca. 45 minutes add zucchinis and celery leaves after 20 minutes
  • Season with salt & pepper to taste
  • When all ingredients are tender (very soft) remove them from the water and place the fish to simmer for ca. 30 minutes or until done
  • Remove the fish from pot and place on a serving platter, add cooked ingredients to broth to heat them
  • Final season of broth with salt, pepper, freshly squeezed lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil

Additional Serving Suggestions

  • Serve with bread
  • You may also cook some rice in the broth and create a more thick and substantial soup
